Step-by-Step Directions

STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS

As mentioned above, these steaks taste best if marinated overnight. If you end up marinating them the day of you will still follow these directions, marinating for as long as possible before placing them on the grill.

Before mixing your tofu BBQ marinade, it is important you remove any of the tofu juices out of the block as we want it to absorb as much flavor as possible. Remove your tofu from the packaging, pour the liquid down the drain and place your block either in a tofu press or wrap it in a tea towel. If using the tea towel method, gently press and squeeze the tofu. Make sure you don’t press too hard as you need it to keep sturdy in structure. Once the tofu is rid of the majority of the liquid it is time to cut your block of tofu into ‘steaks’. You will chop the tofu into four even square-shaped slabs. Cutting the tofu block once through the center as if you were slicing through a fresh sandwich bun, and one more time turning the now thin rectangles into squares. Feel free to pat any of the excess liquid out of the tofu steaks if you notice they are still wet.

Once you have your tofu steaks pressed and cut, it’s time to prepare the marinade. If you were ever pondering how to make BBQ tofu marinade, you will be pleasantly surprised at the effortlessness this step requires. You will need a bowl large enough for the tofu steaks to lay flat along the bottom while still being submerged in the marinade as much as possible. Add all of the teriyaki tofu marinade ingredients to the bowl and mix until combined. Place the tofu steaks in the bowl, coating both sides. Cover the bowl and place in the fridge to marinate either overnight, or for as long as possible.

Once your tofu steaks have soaked in your sauce, it’s time to hit up the outdoors and get grilling. Heat your grill to a medium/high heat. Place the tofu steaks on the grill and cook for around 6-9 minutes per side. I personally enjoy the smoky taste that grilling for a little longer will provide. Once the grilled BBQ tofu is heated through and through, scoop the steaks from the grill and coat with any of the excess marinades.
