Suppliers of dairy and meat products to market giants McDonald’s, KFC, Tesco and Nestlé have proven to be inadequate. Their policies are outdated and not relevant today.

This information has been published in Coller FAIRR, which assesses the environmental and social standing of the major companies in the meat and dairy industry.

The report looks at major risk factors such as: greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and biodiversity issues, water use and scarcity, waste and water pollution, antibiotic use, working conditions, animal welfare and food safety.

Results of the Report

The index findings show that producers of various types of protein lack openness about emissions. This can hinder the companies’ goals and sustainability. To date, about only about 20 percent of meat and dairy producers are open about part of their methane emissions.

The researchers also found that large companies that have pledged not to cut down forests, including JBS and Marfrig, which partner with McDonald’s, do not control their suppliers.

In addition, businesses like Marfrig get more than 50 percent of their cattle from Amazon from indirect suppliers.

The fact that only one of the five meat and dairy giants measures at least some of its methane emissions is a wake-up call for markets, he added, because methane emissions have been promised to be reduced by 30 percent within a decade.
