Breeding Octopuses in Close Cages Is the First Shack for Cannibalism in the Future
The world’s first octopus farm could produce about 3,000 tons of octopus meat a year.
The Spanish company Nueva Pescanova Group has been building the facility for some time, but so far has remained silent about what the farm’s conditions will look like. The company plans to sell sea creatures raised in an aquatic environment as early as 2023.
Animal rights advocates are vehemently opposed to this, and many researchers in turn warn that it is completely unethical.
But is it possible to stop it now?
The First Octopus Farm in the World
After much research, it is known that the firm Nueva Pescanova has raised 50 octopuses in an aquatic environment and plans to increase production shortly.
As you know, the company is investing more than 50 million euros to build a farm in the Canary Islands. Most likely, octopus meat is becoming in demand in international markets, as the company is going to meet the demand in Australia, China, Italy, and other countries.
Other brands are experimenting with their octopus farming. An example of this is the Japanese company Nissui.
Animal Farms and their Ethical Side
More than 550 different species of fish are now being raised in captivity in nearly 200 countries around the world.
Although Nueva Pescanova assures that they want to reduce the pressure on wild octopus fishing, experts are confident that this will not stop fishermen from hunting them.
In biological communities, these animals are considered highly intelligent.
But no one knows how to ensure their well-being in aquaculture. What is certain, however, is that if octopuses are kept too close together, they can become victims of cannibalism.
