By now, it is clear to all that nourishing our bodies with plant-based whole foods is an amazing way to show ourselves we love ourselves. The health benefits that plants alone are able to provide us with are truly gifts. Every plant serves its own purpose and provides the body with vitamins, minerals, energy, and more. There are so many plants we could be talking about, but today we are going to gear our focus towards our beloved eggplant. So what are the health benefits of eggplant? There’s so much to learn and not a lot of time, so we better get started. Today, I am going to let you in on the top health benefits of eggplant. A quick fun fact before we begin, eggplant is also referred to as brinjal at times, so I will be using these two names interchangeably. Not to confuse anyone, so here we go!
When dealing with plants, we are usually working with fibrous foods. One of the benefits of eating eggplant is just that. Eggplant is known for its high fiber contents. Fiber is essential to the human body as it is a key regulator for your bowel movements. Without the presence of fiber in your diet, you will be more prone to constipation or infrequent bowel movements. If you aren’t on a regular schedule so to speak, you may want to think about increasing your fiber intake. Eggplant is a great food among many that will assist in this problem. Fiber tends to nestle within the skin of many fruits and vegetables. The health benefits of eggplant skin would be just this. There is no need to peel the skin of eggplant as it is 100% edible and extremely delicious. This is just one of the many eggplant benefits for health so let’s keep moving forward.
High in Iron
Next up on our list of brinjal health benefits is its ability to provide the body with iron. If you are leading a plant based lifestyle, it can definitely be more difficult at times to receive a sufficient amount of iron on a daily basis. There is a common misconception that the only way to receive a sufficient amount of iron is through the consumption of red meats. Red meats do indeed provide a potent punch of iron once consumed, however, this is not the only way to feed the body with iron. There are many ways in which a vegetarian or vegan can get their intake of iron, eggplant being one of these. Low iron is also known as anemia. Signs of anemia can be bruising, fatigue, and lightheadedness, or dizziness. None of these side effects are ideal so I suggest cooking up some eggplant for dinner tonight. So what are some more nutritional benefits of eggplant? Foods that have a rich purple or red color to them tend to be great antioxidants for the body. Foods such as pomegranates, cherries, blueberries, and surprise, surprise, eggplant. Antioxidants are great for health as they fight off free radicals in the body which in turn prevents the promotion of cancer cell growth. Some people do antioxidant juice cleanses which I have nothing against. However, I would much rather roast up some eggplant or make a great babaganoush before cleansing on antioxidant-rich juices. But hey, to each their own.
Rich in Vitamins and Minerals
To continue on the benefits of the eggplant journey, we have come to the part of this story where we talk about all of the amazing vitamins and minerals that can be found within this magical vegetable. Oh yeah, if you were wondering, I forgot to mention and/or clarify that eggplant is in fact a vegetable. Now that we have cleared that up far too late into this blog, let’s continue. Vitamins are up first. By eating an eggplant, you are providing your body with a strong and potent source of vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin B6. The presence of these vitamins, in particular, makes eggplant a great food to add to your diet during any season, but especially during the winter. With flu season and the common cold always being a worrisome topic, eating eggplant will strengthen your immune system and provide you with the vitamins you need to maintain your health no matter the weather. The list of minerals inside eggplant is quite extensive but here it is. Thiamine, magnesium, niacin, manganese, phosphorus, fiber, copper, folic acid, and the list goes on. All of these minerals are important for a variety of reasons. All that’s really important to know is that these minerals are essential in the health of the body. I know we have been dealing with the brinjal nutritional benefits, but I also want to take a moment to bask in the simple fact that eggplants are a delicious vegetable. It is truly amazing to me that the food that is so good for our bodies is also naturally delicious. I always find myself extremely satiated after eating a whole foods plant-based meal. This is something I will never stop doing as it leaves my body feeling nourished and energized to tackle my days. Some of the ways in which I love cooking eggplant is to bake it with olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper, or to add it into my favorite coconut curry dish. When cooked, eggplant turns into a softer vegetable. Some people have an issue with the texture of this vegetable, but that is what I love so much about it. Eggplant, in my opinion, is pretty neutral in it’s flavor. I always leave it up to my seasonings to provide me with the flavor explosion I need and crave in my foods. Eggplant’s neutral flavor profile makes it quite a versatile food. Another common way to consume eggplant is to turn it into babaganoush. No matter how you eat this food, I guarantee you will be left satiated and satisfied.
