We all know the saying, “Beans beans the magical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot. The more you toot, the better you feel. So let’s eat beans for every meal!”. This was a song that was heavily ingrained throughout the duration of my childhood, and here I am today, still chanting it. I am a huge lover of beans, one of my favorite being chickpeas. I love chickpeas for their versatility, as they are delicious in an abundance of meals. Chickpea ‘tuna’ salad, chana masala, chickpea coconut curry, falafel, and saving the best for last, hummus. Hummus is one of my favorite ways to consume chickpeas, I mean come on, who doesn’t love hummus? Many of my friends watch me consume tub upon a tub of hummus and have raised many questions. Is hummus good for you? Is hummus a good source of protein? Is hummus high in fat? What are the benefits of hummus? The list goes on. I am going to take the time today to answer all of the questions that may be cluttering your mind surrounding one of my favorite foods, hummus. So is hummus healthy? Let’s begin by clarifying what hummus is. If you don’t already know, hummus is essentially a spread or dip made of blended chickpeas. In my opinion, the best and most authentic way to make hummus is by ensuring tahini is added into the mix along with olive oil, lemon, garlic, salt, pepper, and cumin. Hummus can be made or bought in a variety of flavors, but I think the best way is the original way. No extra additional flavors as the original way are simply delicious. So is hummus bad for you? I truly don’t see how we could deem hummus unhealthy as the ingredients in it are quite clean and actually beneficial to our health.

If someone asked you what the hummus health benefits were would you be able to tell them? If not in the past, after today you will. The first health benefit we are going to cover is that hummus is jam-packed with plant-based protein. Chickpeas as well as tahini pack a protein punch, making them the perfect food to eat. Especially if you are leading a plant-based lifestyle, hummus is a great way to get more protein into your diet. Is hummus a good source of fiber? It most definitely is. Fiber is essential to the body in order to maintain a healthy digestive system. If you want to be more regular with your bowel movements, implementing hummus into your diet is a great way to keep everything moving throughout your system. Moving on, hummus also contains some essential vitamins and minerals that are great for our body’s health. Some minerals and vitamins in hummus are calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and essential B vitamins. Vitamins and minerals don’t have to be supplemented when foods have the potential to nourish the body on their own. All you have to do is enjoy your creamy hummus to reap the benefits. I have heard many people ask time after time, “Is hummus healthy or fattening?”. Well, it is both healthy and fattening. For some reason, society has made many of us fear fatty foods. What society doesn’t always mention is that it is important to feed our bodies healthy fats. As earlier mentioned, olive oil falls into the hummus recipe which is in fact a healthy fat. The presence of olive oil makes the hummus heart healthy. Many studies have shown that the consumption of healthy oils, such as olive oil, leads to a decrease in heart disease. So if I have one piece of advice for you, it is to eat your heart out in hummus. Keep reading to find out some of the best ways to eat your heart healthy and fattening hummus.

Now that we know everything we need to know about hummus, it’s time to talk about what’s really important. These being all the ways in which we can consume this magical food. Hummus is very versatile and can be a simple addition to a larger meal or can be the main on its own. If you are a lover of sandwiches, wraps, and paninis, I highly suggest taking these foods to the next level by adding a nice thick layer of some creamy hummus. You may be skeptical at first as you don’t want to ruin your amazing sandwich, but I promise you it is amazing. I even go as far as adding hummus onto my vegan burgers because why miss out on the opportunity to eat hummus? Another great way to eat hummus is to add it to your delicious salad bowls. Adding hummus adds texture and thickness to contrast the crunch of your vegetables. Sometimes I use hummus as a dip for my roasted sweet potato fries. It may sound strange, but I promise you it is delicious. Another great use for hummus is to use it as a pasta sauce. You will be surprised at how creamy your pasta will end up while using hummus as the sauce. Lastly, having hummus as the main dish is always a power move. Pair your hummus with some warm pita and olives and I promise you your taste buds will be in heaven. Whatever you do and however you decide to consume your hummus, just promise me you will eat it with a smile on your face.
