Also known as canoe plants, it grows on large trees that can reach up to a height of 26 meters, and yes, what grows on these trees is in fact considered fruit. These trees are very low maintenance and can produce up to 200 fruits in one season allowing it to fall under the category of a high-yielding food plant. Breadfruit has taken quite the journey, originating in New Guinea but now existing in around 90 different countries. These countries can be found throughout South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean, Central America, and Africa. Another ‘where’ we can cover is where it gets its name from. The name breadfruit simply comes from the flavor of the food. When cooked, this starchy fruit tastes like freshly baked bread. Because of its more savory profile, it is used more like a vegetable.
